Isle of Wight Council Local Listing Status

The War Memorial has been included in the list of structures of Local importance held by the Isle of Wight Council (June 2008).

Description

A stone cenotaph, which is now displayed in a partially demolished state.
The memorial is made of Cornish granite and was originally 13 ft in height. The names were cast in bronze tablets. Originally located at the corner of Market Hill and the High Street, Cowes, outside the then Post Office.
The Memorial was unveiled by Maj-Gen J E B Seely, CB, CMG, DSO, JP, MP., and dedicated by the Vicar of Holy Trinity, on Wednesday 30th March 1921. It was designed by Mr Andrew Forster MBE, and built by Messrs J Ball and Son. The Memorial was partially destroyed during World War II, with the loss of the bronze name panels.

No names for World War II were originally installed.

In 2010 Cowes Town Council commissioned work to relay the paving around the Memorial, and to provide granite plaques naming those men from both World Wars who died. The work was carried out by G J Banks (paving and restoration) and Wight Stonemasonry Ltd (engraving names and gilding).

The Memorial was rededicated on Sunday 14th November 2010 in a short service conducted by the Rev. Canon Richard Emblin.
