The Isle of Wight County Press Death notice of 10 Nov 1917 states :
"Wallace George (Wally) Caws, aged 31, who was killed at sea while doing his duty on October 9th, 1917 (son of Mr W G Caws, HM Customs,
West Hartlepool), late of Cowes, who will ever be loved and remembered by his cousin (Hartley)." Served in the Mercantile Marine as Third Engineer, SS Peshawur.
W G Caws snr was born in St Helens, Isle of Wight; W G Caws jnr was born in Jersey. The family were in Cowes in 1890 when a daughter,
Dorothy, was born. Dorothy Caws was killed on 16 Dec 1914 in the shelling of Hartlepool by enemy action. |
