Saturday, June 25 1938 Motor-Cyclist Rams House. Richard James Gerrett, an insurance agent, of 36 Cypress-road, Newport, had a fortunate escape from injury on Thursday, when at about 2 a.m., on his way from Shanklin to Newport, he ran into Welcomes, the residence of Mr. Hickman. The force of the impact smashed two windows of the house, and the front part of the vehicle was extensively damaged, but the rider escaped unhurt.

Saturday, November 27, 1943 Newport Secondary School Reunion ... Deep sympathy was expressed with the relatives of the following old students who have died since the last meeting : Sybil Matthews, Mrs Kemp Day (née Dorothy Noyce), and Donald Abraham, from injuries received in an air-raid; killed on active service, Flight-Sergt. Engineer Patrick Hodgkinson, R.A.F.; and reported missing, presumed killed, Sergt. Albert Hawkins, R.A.F., Pilot Officer Richard Gerrett, R.A.F., Flight-Sergt. Engineer David Hart, R.A.F., and Sergt. Alec Samuel, R.A.F.V.R. ... Other crew members : The following are the crew members of the aircraft in which P/O Gerrett lost his life :
172 Sqn. operated Vickers Wellington aircraft on anti-submarine operations over the Atlantic. In this operation the aircraft was Wellington XII MP509 which was shot down whilst attacking U402 in the Bay of Biscay on the night of 7/8 Sep 1943. The initial attack was carried out by another Wellington XIV (Capt was F/O Armstrong) who dropped Depth Charges. This was followed by MP509 which was shot down by U402. [Coastal Command losses 1943]. All the crew members are commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial.
