Graham Cullin writes :
John Walter Harley was born on the 15th March 1921 the youngest son of James Alfred and Elizabeth Harley (née Elsworthy) and resided with them at 3 Ash Road, Newport. I regret I know nothing about his schooling, but the next event in his life of which I am aware is that his mother died in December 1934. Somewhen in 1936 his father left the Isle of Wight to live at Portsmouth, and John went to live with his aunt (his mother's younger sister) Clara Woodburn at 109 Pelham Road, Cowes, and this was his home address at the time of death.
Prior to joining the army John had been employed by H. Bannister & Co., rope makers, of Mill Hill Road, Cowes, for about three years, and I assume that this was his first job after leaving school. He was survived by his father and two older brothers.
The relationship to me is that John's father and my grandmother on my mother's side were brother and sister.
