ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY

Friday, June 6, 1941 Page 3

No less than 84 members of the 3rd Ventnor Boy Scouts are serving their country in the present war - 23 in the Navy, 42 in the Army, and 19 in the Royal Air Force. Four have made the supreme sacrifice, namely, Bagnald [1], Newnham, Paffett and Lale.

(not all the report has been transcribed)

[1] Believed to refer to Eric H Bagnald, who did not die, but, in a later report of 19 July 1941, is stated to have been wounded :

Isle of Wight County Press

19th July 1941

VENTNOR MEN DECORATED
Acting Flight Officer Eric H. Bagnald, son of Mrs. Bagnald, The Nook, Bonchurch, has been awarded the D.F.C. for bringing his plane home safely after a raid on Germany in which he was injured. Before enlisting, he was on the staff of the National Provincial Bank and was a former student at Sandown Secondary School and a member of Ventnor Boy Scouts. He is on a visit to his home and has an arm in a sling.

Report of unveiling [April 1950, probably from the IW Mercury] - note some discrepancies in names as given, against those inscribed on the Memorial; The report lists W ABBOTT instead of A ABBOTT and D COWAN although D COWIE is listed on the memorial. A A KING is not listed in the report
