THE WAR MEMORIAL OBELISK
The erection of the war memorial obelisk at the bottom of The Broadway has now
been completed and it is agreed on all sides that it is a handsome monument. Viewed from The Broadway
with its green background, it stands out strikingly. It has been erected by the West Wight Monumental
Company in Portland stone and is some 15ft in height. On the front panel is inscribed '1914-19 - Remember those who died for us,'
whilst the three other panels around the column bear the names of 36 local men who made the great sacrifice.
Congratulations and thanks are due to Messrs F. G. Aman and C. G. Ring, to whose energy and enthusiasm
the raising of the memorial is due. The ground around the obelisk is to be suitably laid out, and
when this work is completed the memorial will be formally handed over to the parish.

TOTLAND BAY
THE WAR MEMORIAL
The laying out of the immediate surroundings of the war memorial obelisk
in the Broadway has been completed, and adds much to its effectiveness. Iron railings have
been placed around the foot of the obelisk, a stone-coping around the corner plot of land on which it stands,
and variegated euonymus shrubs planted on either side of the path running from the roadway.
An additional World War II name (A E BUDDEN) was inscribed on the memorial in March 1999.
A further name LT-COL F P ST MAUR SHIEL has been added.
These additional WW II names were inscribed by
Wight Stonemasonry Ltd.
