Description and history

Designed by Mr Percy Stone and erected by Mr Newman of Freshwater. The Cross and Die are of Hopton Wood stone, the steps of Portland, and the surrounding base is of Ventnor rag. The total cost was £716.

The land on the site, known as "Swiss Corner", was donated by Sir John and Lady Thorneycroft.

It was unveiled and dedicated respectively by Brig General L F Phillips CB CMG CBE DSO, and the Rev H le Fleming. The day of dedication was Thursday the 11th of November 1920. (See copy of Order of Service).

From a population of 1,432, 296 men (and 15 women) answered the call. Forty six men failed to return.

The names of 21 men who died in World War II were subsequently added. The memorial also records the names of one man who died in the Korean War, and another who died during the Falklands conflict.
