[obituary]

Major E H Lewis had seen a great deal of active service before this war, having served in two crack cavalry regiments in the Soudan, Ashanti and Nigeria. He was gazetted second-lieutenant in the 21st Hussars on 17th December 1892, lieutenant on 12th August 1896, and captain in the 21st Lancers on 30th December 1899. He served in the Soudan campaign of 1898, and was present at the battle of Omdurman, for which he received the medal, together with the Khedive's medal and clasp. He was seconded for service with the West African Field Force on 1st July 1899, and served in the Ashanti campaign of 1900 (medal), in North Nigeria, 1901, and capture of Konlagora, being mentioned in despatches and receiving the medal with clasp. He also served in North Nigeria in 1903, being at the capture of Kano, and received the clasp. He joined the 8th Hants Regiment in October 1913, and has proved a very smart and popular officer as second in command. For some time during the training on the mainland he was in command of the regiment during the absence of Col Rhodes through the result of an accident, owing to his horse falling and throwing him. His Island home was Corstorphine, Spencer-road, Ryde, where his wife and three young children are residing.
