Many Isle of Wight men lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, serving mainly with the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment, the 1/8th Bn Hampshire Regiment (the Isle of Wight Rifles) and the Australian and New Zealand Forces.

These pages provide details of these IoW men (and those with IoW connections) known to be commemorated or buried on the Gallipoli peninsular. It is not meant to be a comprehensive listing of all the Allied casualties suffered.

The majority of those killed have no known grave, and are recorded on the Helles Memorial to the missing. The Isle of Wight men involved fall into three groups: those killed when the troopship HMT "Royal Edward" was torpedoed on the 13 August 1915 (men from the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment); those killed in the V Beach and and Suvla Bay landings (mainly men from the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment, and the 1/8th Bn Hampshire Regiment (Isle of Wight Rifles)); and there are also a few men who served with other UK Regiments (not illustrated).

Panels 125 - 134 name Hampshire Regiment men (mainly from the 2nd, 10th, and 1/8th Battalions)
Panels 223 - 229 name the men of the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment who died in the sinking of the "Royal Edward"
Panel 328 names some other men (but was not accessible due to restoration work at the time of visit in June 2010)

Note that the inscriptions are very shallow and for unrestored panels, they can be difficult to read
