ERNEST LEONARD CHAMBERS LEAL, R.E. WHO WAS KILLED IN FRANCE ON APRIL 9TH 1915 AGED 24 YEARS Name : Cecil Jack Leal. Son of Ernest John and Hannah Leal, of 61, Carisbrooke Rd., Newport, Isle of Wight. Born 1894, Whippingham, Isle of Wight. Census 1911 : Family at 61 Carisbrooke Road, Newport. Cecil is shown as a printers's apprentice. Cecil Jack Leal enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps on 24 May 1915, a few weeks after the death of his brother Ernest. He was posted to 11th Training Reserve Battallion and then sent to France on active service near Etaples. He was wounded in 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit for service in 1918 and received the Silver War Badge and King's Certificate.
