The son of Air Commodore B C H Drew, Peter Drew was born 16th July 1910 and the family lived at Seaview. He attended Marlborough College from 1924 to 1929 and entered the RAF College, Cranwell, as a Flight Cadet in September 1929. On graduation as a Pilot Officer he joined 1 Sqn at Tangmere on 25th July 1931. Drew was promoted Flying Officer on 25th January 1933 and on 28th February that year he was posted to the staff at S.H.O. Heliopolis, returning to the UK in June 1935. Promoted to Flight Lieutenant on 1st April 1936 he was appointed as an instructor at 6 Flying Training School at Netheravon. On 24th March 1937 he was transferred to the Staff Central Flying School at Upavon. He was promoted Squadron Leader on 1st December 1938. Following the outbreak of War, he became the Commanding Officer of 236 Squadron in July 1940 but was killed just weeks later. Flying a Bristol Blenheim Mk.IV, with Navigator/Air Gunner Flg/Off Benjamin Nokes-Cooper, the aircraft was shot down during a bomber escort mission to attack Quegueville Aerodrome in France. Drew's grave is the only CWGC burial at Biville Churchyard. Nokes-Cooper is buried at Bayeux War Cemetery. |
