1st Newport Scout Headquarters, St John's Road, Newport, Isle of Wight IWM War Memorials Archive Record Link : War Memorials Archive Reference 40758 WW I Memorial Link : War Memorials Archive Reference 40759 WW II Memorial Description Memorials to Newport Scouts who died in the Great War and World War II. The Great War Memorial was unveiled and dedicated 9th November 1920. The Second World War Memorial was designed to match the Great War memorial since both are the same size (approx 14 in wide by 24 in high), and made of painted and carved wood. The Memorials were originally in the Scout Headquarters at Holyrood Street, and moved to the new Scout Headquarters off St John's Road in 1971. {Thanks to Group Scout Leader Rod Warne for permission to photograph the memorials in 2007] |

From "1st Newport - History of the 1st Newport IW Troop (The Old Guard)" by J H Burgess, Group Scoutmaster (undated) : Arthur Tosdevin was killed in Gallipoli [his name does not appear on memorial] CWGC record ... Joe Hall was killed in France, 1916 Joe Dore [H W Dore] was killed near Ypres, June 8th [1917], and his grave is at Lissenthoek, Belgium. He is quoted as having a "dry chuckle and quiet ways" and an utterly loyal and loveable nature. |
