Gunner Mateer is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground in Belgium, so this memorial stone does not mark his actual burial plot, but it is almost a replica of the headstone in Belgium.

The reference to John 3:16 gives the verse 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.'
