WHO DIED MARCH 8TH 1918 AT FULHAM MILITARY HOSPITAL, LONDON FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED IN FRANCE AGED 22 YEARS HE'S RESTING NOW - FREE FROM ALL PAIN AND SIN AND STRIFE - HIS DUTY DONE Further Information Son of Alice Mary Bull of Newport. Born 1896 Newport (registered as Ernest James Bull). His parents Samuel White and Alice Mary Bull married in 1903. Census Details : 1901 : Ernest Bull, aged 6, is with his grandparents Robert and Janet Bull, at 9, Upper Field Place, Newport. His mother, Alice Mary Bull, is a Housemaid in service with the Wyeth family at 97, High Street, Newport. 1911 : Samuel and Alice Mary White, with Ernest aged 15, are at 8 Field Place, Newport. Samuel White is a Brewer's labourer; Ernest is a Baker's Errand Boy. Service Details : Sergeant 12709 Ernest James White, Depot, Worcestershire Regiment. Casualty Details : Died 8th March 1918, aged 22, at Fulham Military Hospital. CWGC record ... Saturday, March 16, 1918 Page 8 MILITARY FUNERAL. - The funeral of Sergt. E. White, Worcestershire Regiment, took place at Carisbrooke Cemetery, with military honours, on Thursday. Deceased passed away at Fulham Military Hospital as the result of wounds received in France on August 16 last. The mourners were deceased's parents, sister, and grandparents, Messrs. F. Bull, H. Harding, and Sergt.-Major Mew (uncles), Miss Bull, Miss K, Bull, Mrs. J. Bull, and Mrs. A. Bull (aunts), and Miss M. Harding (cousin). There were beautiful flowers, including those from the staff and scholars of the Newport C.E. School and from the nursing staff and comrades in D2 Ward, Fulham Military Hospital. Sergt. White was an old National School boy, and as the funeral cortege passed the boys stood at the salute in the play-ground, and the flag was flying at half-mast. Deceased joined the Worcestershire Regiment at Parkhurst in 1911, proceeded to France in August, 1914, and was wounded there in the following July. After serving in Gallipoli and Egypt he returned to France in March, 1916. |
