Friday, October 26, 1917 Page 1 We regret to hear that Corporal-of-Horse Tom Rayner, of the Household Cavalry (son of Mr. Harry Rayner, of Upper Ventnor), has been killed in France. He was a smart and efficient soldier and much liked by everybody. Only a few months ago he was home on leave. He was shot through the head by a sniper. Corpl. Rayner before enlisting worked at Eastman's Ltd. Page 3 CORPORAL-OF-HORSE TOM RAYNER The sad news has been received of the death of Corporal-of-Horse T.C.H. Rayner, Household battalion, son of Mr. Harry Rayner, of Mountain Cottage, Upper Ventnor. The many friends of deceased received the intelligence with sincere feelings of sympathy and regret. Corporal Rayner, who was 23 years of age, was home on leave a short time ago after ten months' efficient service on the western front. He formerly worked at Eastman's Ltd., High Street. In a letter to his sister, Mrs. R.H. Symmans, the Lieutenant-Colonel of his battalion writes as follows: "I am writing to tell you that your brother, Corpl.-at-Horse T. Rayner, was killed at Poelcappelle on the 12th October. Please accept my deepest sympathy. He was a very brave man and quite one of the best N.C.O.s in the battalion. He is a great loss to the battalion, in which he has done magnificent service."
