Ventnor Men in Action.

Additional names of missing Ventnor men in the Dardanelles are those of Rifleman C.R. King, son of Mrs. T. King, 7, Webster Cottages, P. Gilbert, son of Mrs. Gilbert, Albert Street, and Harvey, son of Lance-Corporal and Mrs. Harvey, of 7 Richmond Terrace. Harvey's mother has received official information that her son is reported from Alexandria as missing. Rifleman King was corporal up to the time of leaving Watford. It is rumoured that Rifleman Gilbert has been taken to hospital wounded, but no definite details are to hand. Mrs. T. King would be much obliged for any information concerning her son, who was in B Company 1/8th Hants.

Mrs. King, of 7, Market Street, has now received official intimation of the death in action of her son, Pte. C.R. King, 1/8th Battalion, Hants Regiment, which occurred on August 13th, 1915, in the course of the landing at Gallipoli. It will be remembered that he was reported missing at the time. Pte. King was a well known and much liked Ventnor lad. He was an old National School boy, and afterwards, on winning a scholarship, attended the Secondary School at Sandown for three years. He was a member of the St. Catherine's Choir for several years. The greatest sympathy is expressed with his mother, who has naturally been living under considerable strain since the news came some months ago that her son was missing. Three other of her sons are on active service, one being shut up with the Island Howitzers at Kut-el-Amara. Pte. King was only 18 years of age.

Intelligence has now been received - and confirms views which were feared though not expressed - of the death of Driver Tom King, husband of Mrs. King, York Villas, and son of Mrs. T. King, of Ventnor. The news came from the Swiss Red Cross Society that Driver King died of enteric in August last. This is the second son Mrs. King has lost in the war, her youngest son, Corporal Roy King, falling in the Dardanelles Campaign. Mrs. King's immediate family relatives have also received bereavements during the war.
