ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY
Friday, September 17, 1915 Ventnor Men in Action. Additional names of missing Ventnor men in the Dardanelles are those of Rifleman C.R. King, son of Mrs. T. King, 7, Webster Cottages, P. Gilbert, son of Mrs. Gilbert, Albert Street, and Harvey, son of Lance-Corporal and Mrs. Harvey, of 7 Richmond Terrace. Harvey's mother has received official information that her son is reported from Alexandria as missing. Rifleman King was corporal up to the time of leaving Watford. It is rumoured that Rifleman Gilbert has been taken to hospital wounded, but no definite details are to hand. Mrs. T. King would be much obliged for any information concerning her son, who was in B Company 1/8th Hants.
ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY
Friday, July 28, 1916 Page 4 Mrs. Gilbert, of Albert Street, has received official information of a nature which unfortunately holds out little hope for the safety of her son, Private P. Gilbert, of the 8th Hants Regiment. Private Gilbert has been missing since August 12th, 1915 during the early days of the campaign in Gallipoli. He was a range-finder in the battalion. The Army Council state that Pte. Gilbert has been missing for so long a time that they have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead. The large number of friends of the family in Ventnor and elsewhere will sincerely hope that better news will be forthcoming. We hear that similar information has been received by the relatives of Rifleman A. Harvey (son of Corpl. and Mrs. E. Harvey), of Ventnor, who was also reported missing at the same time. It is believed that the reference to Rifleman A. Harvey relates to Herbert Daniel John Harvey - the only man in the Battalion with this surname to be killed. His father Ernest served with the Hampshire Regiment and Labour Corps during the war. |
