1st December 1917. KILLED IN ACTION, ETC DOWNER - Nov. 2, killed in action in Palestine, Bugler E. Downer, the loving husband of Alice Downer (née Marshall), of Ryde, and second and dearly-loved son of Mrs. C. Plowman, Buona Vista, Esplanade, Ryde. We little thought, when we said good-bye, We were parted for ever, and you were to die; But a foreign grave is the bitterest blow That only an aching heart can know. You are laid to rest in a far-off land, And your grave I may never see, But some gentle hand, in that far-off land, May sprinkle some flowers for me. | |
