George Frederick HOLBROOK was born on 3rd October 1892,
the son of Austin William HOLBROOK and his wife, Bertha (née PARSONS) of Sandown.
His father died in 1895 and in 1901 the family were living at 1 Perner Cottages, North Street, Sandown.
George Frederick was posted as wounded and missing in August 1915, but it was not until February 1917
that he was officially notified as killed. He died on 12th August 1915 aged 22.
George Frederick HOLBROOK's relatives William John Newbury (Newbery) (his uncle) and Henry Michael O'Hare (his second cousin), also died in World War I.

Saturday, February 17, 1917 SANDOWN - Mrs. HOLBROOK of Lyra, North Street, has been officially notified that as no further information has been received of her son Private George Frederick HOLBROOK Hampshire Regiment, he would be posted as killed on 12th August 1915. HOLBROOK took part in the terrible charge made by the Hampshires in Gallipoli on the date named when several local men were killed and others badly injured. He was reported wounded and missing, but despite all inquiries, no trace of him has been forthcoming. Private HOLBROOK served four years with the Isle of Wight Rifles previous to the war and rejoined at the recruiting meeting in September 1914. He was previously employed as a bootmaker by Mr. H. PHILLIPS of Avenue Road. He was an only son and 22 years of age. Information provided by : Janet Griffin. |
