Percy Hendy was born in 1886, the youngest son of Isaac Hendy, a plasterer, and his wife Hannah. The family lived at "Cliff View", Cross Street, Sandown.
Percy worked as a porter at Yelf's in Union Road, Ryde. He married Mary Rice in 1911, (on their marriage certificate he is described as a brewer), and they had three children: William Alan, born 1912; Leonard Percy, born 1914; and Ronald James, born 1916.
He mentions his three 'dear boys' in a letter to his wife which he wrote shortly before his death. This can be seen below. The letter which the chaplain, G H Peskett, wrote to his sister
Jessie is also shown - this is also mentioned in the County Press report.
Percy was serving with the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment. On 29th June 1917 they
moved to Dead Man Farm, near Boezinghe in Belgium (Ypres Salient). They were digging and making good trenches
on 30th June 1917 when they came under artillery fire. Percy was one of the
wounded and unfortunately died of his wounds on 1st
July 1917 at Mendinghem Casualty Clearing Station 46. Buried in Mendinghem Military cemetery, his headstone bears the badges of both the Hampshire Regiment and the King's Royal Rifle Corps, since he is buried with a Rifleman of that Corps.
