The aircraft took off from RAF Scampton at 23.26 hrs for operations over Germany. Shot down by a nightfighter, it crashed at Tostedt.
Some of the crew are buried in Germany; others with no known grave are commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial.

Born on the Island in 1919, Sgt Elcox attended Ryde School, where his name appears on the Ryde School War Memorial. His mother came from Seaview. He had only recently married.
