10 Aircraft of 127 Sqn, flying from aerodrome B60 in Grimbergen, Belgium, were involved in a bombing sortie against German gun positions (possibly on the Island of Walcheren) on the 2nd October 1944. Flt/Lt Whittington's aircraft was shot down, but the aircraft and his body were not found until about May 1948.

Whittington had lived in Lake, Isle of Wight.
