Description Shanklin Chine was used as a training area for 40 Royal Marine Commando in World War II. This series of plaques commemorates the Royal Marines who served and died. Upper Chine School was closed in 1999, and the site is now residential.
The plaque which was placed in the school grounds was stolen in 1999. Any information about its whereabouts would be gratefully received so that it may be reinstated in the Chine.

IN PROUD AND EVERLASTING MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF 40 ROYAL MARINE COMMANDO WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN NORMANDY, HOLLAND AND GERMANY THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE UNIT WAAS IN UPPER CHINE SCHOOL, SHANKLIN BEFORE THE NORMANDY LANDINGS ROYAL MARINES REMEMBERING WITH PRIDE THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF 40 ROYAL MARINE COMMANDO WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AT DIEPPE, 19TH AUGUST 1942 AND IN SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS IN SICILY, ITALY, GREECE YUGOSLAVIA AND ALBANIA BETWEEN JULY 1943 AND MAY 1945 THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE COMMANDO WAS IN UPPER CHINE SCHOOL, SHANKLIN, BETWEEN MAY 1942 AND MARCH 1943 AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN, AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Further Information When Upper Chine School was open, a framed history of the Unit was displayed in the entrance hall. The history named a number of officers who were killed or taken prisoner :
