ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY
Friday, February 8, 1918 Page 3 Freshwater Tragedy Case. RARE METHOD OF PROCEDURE. With reference to the case of C.Q.M.S. Henry Samuel Shead, D.C.L.I., of Freshwater, who was remanded to Portsmouth Prison for a week by the Isle of Wight County Justices on Saturday, on a charge of murdering B.Q.M.S. Michael Carroll, R.G.A., by shooting him at Golden Hill on Sunday, the 27th ult., it has been found that time does not permit of the usual magisterial inquiry if the bill of indictment is to arrive at Winchester in time for the Hants Assizes which opened yesterday (Thursday). It has therefore been decided that the trial at the Assizes shall proceed on the Coroner's inquisition - a very rare method of procedure - which charges the accused man with manslaughter in accordance with the verdict of the Coroner's jury. |
