Serjeant Barbara Kentish of the Women's Territorial Service (East Africa) lost her life when the troopship SS 'Khedive Ismail'
was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-27 in the Indian Ocean en route to Ceylon. She is commemorated on the East Africa Memorial in Nairobi, Kenya.
