Service details
The aircraft took off at 18:39 hrs from RAF Wickenby for Ops on Berlin. On the homeward journey, and well south of track over Duisburg, the aircraft nose was hit by flak, setting it on fire. The crew abandoned the aircraft soon after, and the aircraft crashed at Geldern-Veert. Four crew members died; Hentsch, Cringle, Birch and Wimlett. Two crew members were taken prisoner; Rudy and Summers; while Keveren evaded capture and escaped via Holland to England. Flt Officer Hentsch is remembered on his father's headstone at Sandown Cemetery. It is presumed that his parents moved to the Isle of Wight. Information and photograph provided by : John Bloodworth |
