On 24th February 1945, an Avro Lancaster bomber (RF137 QR-E of 61 Sqn), having returned to RAF Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire from a raid,
was being disarmed when it suddenly blew up killing a number of the ground crew, and injuring many more.
Ldg Aircraftmen Benjamin Burnell,
Claude Henry Higgins and
Henry George Wilson were among those killed.
