The names on the memorial represent just a fraction of the Isle of Wight men who volunteered. Of those named on the Ryde memorial, Trooper W H Keenan was killed by Boers after the Senekal action, and Sergeant S W Caws went on to serve in the Great War, being killed while serving with the Royal Flying Corps. He has a memorial plaque at St Helen's Church in St Helens. Major J.E.B. Seely's son Frank Reginald Seely was killed in 1917, as was his nephew Charles Grant Seely. Another nephew, Nigel Richard William Seely died in World War II. |
