Description and history
Designed by Sir Arthur Temple Felix Clay (1842-1928), a barrister and amateur landscape and portrait artist.
Made and erected by T & J Ellery of Ryde.
A Hopton Wood stone cross on a Portland stone base.
Paid for by public subscription, costing just over £200.
Unveiled and dedicated on Sunday 3rd October 1920 by Laura, Lady Simeon, and the Rev Dr L D Tugwell, rector and rural dean of West Wight.

Wilfred Henry Holbrook was a gamekeeper who lived at The Temple, Calbourne. On his Death Certificate his date of death is given as 1 February 1941, aged 22.
He is listed as Gunner 1497757 Royal Artillery.
He died of TB at the Sanatorium at Middleton in Yorkshire (West Riding). |
