Further information :
Robert Morris writes : Arthur John Morris, was born January 31, 1881, at Whiteley Bank, Isle of Wight. He went to school at Wroxall and at Sandown, before apprenticing himself to a carpenter to learn the building trade. He enlisted in the Army during the Boer War and served for 18 months in South Africa as a medical orderly. He received his discharge in Cape Town and went to work for a construction gang. When plague struck the area, he was ordered to duty as a male nurse helping innoculate the townsfolk. He then returned to England and re-entered the building trades. He came to Canada in 1904 with a construction crew, building MacDonald College at Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec. He was later made building superintendent of the college. In 1912 he moved west to farm near Red Deer, Alberta. He was soon to accept a position with the experimental farm in nearby Lacombe. In 1928 he moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he accepted a position as superintendent of the parks department. He retired from the parks department on January 31, 1949, and passed away two months later. Arthur Morris was married twice and had a son and a daughter by his first wife, who was Elizabeth Mary Barton of Newport. Elizabeth gave birth to a son, Arthur William Morris, who was my father, and a daughter, Ethel Morris. Today there are 5 surviving grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
