ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY
Friday, October 23, 1914 Page 5 LOCAL MEN ON SERVICE. - ... Writing to his father, Mr. F.G. Dennes, of Kildare Cottages, Pte. Victor Dennes, of the 1st Lifeguards, says he rather likes the experience he is passing through at the front. The Germans do not fight fairly and in a tight corner are cowards. They fight splendidly if they are ten to one Englishman. He has been in some narrow squeaks, but up to the time of writing he has come out smiling. There is a real sport in some of the engagements. It is while sitting round the camp fire at night that the thought of home comes to one, and he says he will be very glad to get back to dear old England. Concluding his letter, Pte. Dennes says, "Wight-man is alright."
