Son of Frank Canton and Florence Canton (née Smith), of Woodlands, Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

Born 1892 Walton on Thames, Surrey.

1901 : Frank and Florence Canton, with their children including Herbert aged 9, are at Chilton Lodge, The Avenue, Surbiton. Frank Canton is a Wine and Spirit Merchant.

1911 : Herbert Canton, aged 19, is a Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Camberley, Surrey.

The greatest sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. F. Canton, of "Woodlands," Ventnor in the death at the front of their only son, Lieutenant Herbert W. Canton, of the East Lancashire Regiment. He had been at the front since last August and had taken part in some of the hardest fighting. The gallant officer was killed in action near Ypres on May 13th. Lieutenant Canton was 24 years of age.
