Was Army Saddler for 23 Years

A popular local man, Mr. Mark James William Allen, of 1 Grovehurst, Marlborough Road, died at his home on Christmas Eve. He was 78.
Mr. Allen joined the Royal Artillery at the turn of the century, soon after transferring to the Royal Army Service Corps, in which he was a saddler. He was demobilised in January, 1924, after 23 years service.
For 24 years, he was afterwards storeman at the Royal National Hospital, retiring in July 1953. Mr. Allen was a member of the Old Contemptibles, and served in the Home Guard in the last world war.
Mr. Allen was for a period commissionaire at the old Gaiety Cinema in Grove Road. He was a pleasant, kindly man, of a retiring nature, and loved nothing better than to garden, or to potter about in his shed.
Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Allen, and the four children, Joan, Betty, Maurice and Angela.
The funeral takes place today, 2 p.m., at St. Catherine's Church, with Blakes making the arrangements.
