Unknown person Name : Charles Allen

Son of Lydia Harris of Shanklin. Father presumed to be Jesse Allen.

Born 1890, Shanklin (registered as Allen Charles Harris).

Lydia Harris married Jesse Allen in 1895, at St Paul's Church, Gatten.

Jesse Allen died in 1913 aged 42.

Lydia Allen née Harris married William F Callahan in late 1913 (GRO Tynemouth Dec 1913) and moved to Chirton, North Shields which is the address given on Charles Allen's Service papers.

  Census information :

1891 : Lydia Harris, (single, aged 19) with her son Allen C Harris, aged 4 months, is a Visitor at the houselhold of Ernest G Allen, (her future brother-in-law) at Station Road, Shanklin. Ernest G Allen is a Bricklayer's Labourer.

1891 : Jesse Allen is a Corporal in the Militia Artillery at Sandown Barracks.

1901 : Jessie [sic] and Lydia Allen, with their children including Charles aged 10, are at 9, Oatlands, Garfield Road, Shanklin. Jesse Allen is a General labourer.

1911 : Jesse and Lydia Allen, with some of their children, are at 1 Clarendon Villas, Clarendon Road, Shanklin. Jesse Allen is a General labourer.

1911 : Charles Allen, not located, presumed serving in the Army - he was in Khartoum Hospital in 1912
  Service Details :

Corporal 3400 Charles Allen, 4th Bn., Rifle Brigade.

Charles Allen enlisted at Parkhurst on 9 February 1908 in the Rifle Brigade. His trade was given as Tailor.

His Service papers also name his brother Ernest Allen, and a number of his aunts and uncles : Mary J Richardson, George H Harris, Frances R Harris, and Ernest J Harris.

Charles Allen was lost in the Fleet Messenger "Princess Alberta", sunk by mine between Stavros and Mudros on 21 February 1917.
  Casualty Details :

Died : 21 February 1917, aged 27.

Commemorated at : Mikra Memorial, Greece.
