Tony Lonnen's Death in Captivity
On Wednesday, Mrs. Douglas Graves,[2] 80 Medina Avenue, Newport, received the distressing news that her brother, T/Cpl. Neely Anthony (Tony) Lonnen, had died whilst a prisoner of war in Malaya. Aged 27, he was the son of the late Mr. F.J. Lonnen, of the Island Stores, Ventnor, and went to Singapore in September 1939. He was taken prisoner in Java in 1942. Last week Mrs. Graves received a card from him from Malaya - the first for 18 months - stating that he was keeping well and cheerful. Tony assisted his father in the business prior to joining the R.A.F. in '37.
