ISLE OF WIGHT MERCURY
Friday, July 30, 1943 Page 2 Ventnor and the War Ventnor Airman Killed Twelve months ago Sergt. Lionel Dowling, only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Dowling, of "Lindore,"
Lowtherville Road, was posted as missing following an operational flight. His parents have now
been officially informed that their son must be presumed to have been killed. Sergt. Dowling
was only 21 years of age. We are sure Mr. and Mrs. Dowling will have the heartfelt sympathy
of all who know them in their sad loss.
The aircraft took off from RAF Middleton St George at 22.53 hrs for operations to bomb Hamburg. It was hit by flak and came down in the River Elbe. It is believed that some of the crew's bodies were taken to Hamburg-Ohlsdorf Cemetery, but their burials appear not to have been recorded by the CWGC and their names are commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial. |
