AC2 Rumbold died when a Bristol Beaufighter (serial no R2089) crashed on take off into an accommodation hut occupied by Aircraftmen. Rumbold and another Aircraftman died, many others were seriously injured.
The pilot of the Beaufighter was P/O C.N. O'Brien who survived. The official findings stated that both engines cut after take off due to fuel problems.
St Stephen's Church, Fradley is in Staffordshire.
Rumbold was serving with 51 MU at RAF Lichfield (also known as RAF Fradley).
AC2 Rumbold came from Sandown, Isle of Wight.
