Alfred Chiverton was born in 1885 in Newport, the son of Frank Chiverton (a cooper by trade) and his wife Elizabeth (née Osborn). In 1891 the family were at 89, Upper St James Street, Newport. He was educated at St Thomas Church of England School. In 1901 the family were listed at 89 & 90, St James Street, Newport, with Alfred shown as a Licensed Oil Hawker. He emigrated to Australia at the age of 21 (probably in 1906) and settled in Werris Creek, New South Wales. His AWM papers describe him as a baker, and that he served 3 years with the Army Service Corps. He died at sea, while on board the "Aquitania", of dysentery.
