H.M.S. Marne was struck by a torpedo from German U-boat U515 whilst
West of Gibraltar during Operations in support of the North Africa landings.
U515 sunk a total of 23 ships and damaged 4 others before being sunk
herself by a United States aircraft; 43 crew were captured, 15 hands lost.
U515's Captain, Commander Werner Henke[+], a Knights Cross holder with Oak Leaves, was later shot
escaping from a USA prison camp.

[+] Korvettenkapitan zur See Werner Henke, was born on 13th May 1909,
and died at Fort Hunt, a secret interrogation center, near Washington DC. His body was transferred to
Fort George G Meade in Maryland, USA on 15 June 1944.
He is buried in grave 8 at Fort Meade.
