The aircraft took off from RAF Breighton at 22.09 hrs for operations to bomb Hamburg, but the aircraft was shot down by flak over Wilhemshaven. Two of the crew who died are buried in Sage War Cemetery. Three of the crew were taken Prisoner of War.
