The aircraft took off at 23.50 hrs from RAF Feltwell for Ops on Essen, but was shot down by night fighters (Oblt Werner Rowlin of NJG1-II) and crashed at 01.59 hrs approx 6 km north of Gildehause in Germany. All the crew are buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetry, three of them in a collective grave.

Herbert Rose had been a pupil at Bembridge School, went to Queen's College, Oxford, and later worked for the L.N.E.R.
