The aircraft took off at 20.23 hrs from RAF Snaith, but was hit by flak which damaged the engines before it crashed at 03.40 hrs near Chalons-sur-Marne in France. Four crewmen who died are buried in the local Cemetery, while Sgt Lancaster RAAF is buried at Choloy War Cemetery.

Mumme had been a pupil at Bembridge School.
