the inscription is very worn, and the last lines have been almost buried by the modern paving SIR JOHN SIMEON, BART., M.P. OF SWAINSTON AND ST JOHN'S IN THIS ISLAND BORN FEB 5 1815, DIED MAY 21 1870 A MAN GREATLY BELOVED TO WHOSE MEMORY EVER HONOURED AND CHERISHED [....] ERECTED BY MANY FRIENDS [....] Further information Landowner : owned the St John's Estate in Ryde, and Swainston Manor St John's Church was built in 1842-3 on land given by Sir John Simeon Ryde Cemetery was built in 1858 on land leased from Sir John Simeon In 1870 he was the subject of a photographic portrait by Julia Margaret Cameron Held various positions : 1838 Swore Oath as a Justice of the Peace (and presumably renewed thereafter) 1847 Provincial Grand Master of the Isle of Wight [Freemasons] 1854 - 6 Master of the Isle of Wight Hunt A Memorial drinking fountain in memory of his son Sir Barrington Simeon is situated on the quayside in Newport. |
