UFFA FOX C.B.E. Marine Designer 1898-1972 lived here. Creator of the parachuted airborne lifeboat, which saved the lives of some 3,000 British and American airmen in World War II. A friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, he also designed and built several yachts and other craft. An East Cowes lad, he was baptized nearby at St James' church on 13th February 1898, and is buried in St Mildred's churchyard, Whippingham.
