Sir Christopher Cockerell C.B.E. 4th June 1910 - 1st June 1999 inventor of the hovercraft lived and worked in the White Cottage, a few yards from this spot. Here, in 1959, he set up his company, Hovercraft Development Ltd. The White Cottage has since been demolished and his garage - a few steps to the left of here - is all that remains.
