Description

A memorial grotto with fountain.

It was commissioned in 1868 in memory of Captain Mark Huish by his wife Margaret. Captain Huish was involved in railway construction after a military career and built houses in Mitchell Avenue in nearby Ventnor. He also initiated the local geological collection.

A small ceramic plaque has been placed in the grotto in memory of John Morelli, who "cared for Bonchurch".

Within the grotto are the initials MH and the date 1868


This memorial grotto was commissioned in 1868
by Mrs Margaret Huish
as a memorial to her late husband
Captain Mark Huish
who followed a military career by becoming
a railway magnate before retiring to Bonchurch
where, nearby in Mitchell Avenue, opposite the
bowling green he built several houses.
He also initiated the local geological collection.

This memorial was refurbished by Ventnor Town Council in 1985
