IWM War Memorials Archive Record Link : War Memorials Archive Reference 40873 Historic England Listing Status St Mildred's Church is Grade I Listed. Since the Memorial forms part of the fittings of the Church, is it assumed that it is included within the Listing. Description Plaque commemorating German soldiers who died in 1794 whilst held on ships off the Isle of Wight. A number of their family members also died. The names of those who died are held in the Whippingham visitors centre near the Church. To the honoured memory of eighty four Hessian soldiers of the Regiments Prinz Carl Lossburg and Gendarmes, also of the Fusilier Battalion Prueschenk who died of disease in the Isle of Wight during the campaign of 1794, and were buried in Whippingham Churchyard This tablet is placed here by The Landgraf A F of Hesse April 1906 Further Information Thanks to the Churchwardens for the list of those who died. |
