Friday, April 13, 1917 Page 3 Dedication of the St. Lawrence Roll of Honour On Easter Sunday, in the presence of a large company, the village Roll of Honour was unveiled and dedicated by General M.L. Carleton, the General Officer commanding the Isle of Wight. The interesting ceremony took place at the conclusion of the morning service. The choir, followed by the Churchwardens, (Messrs. Greenhalgh and Yelf), the General, the Rector and congregation, walked in procession to the Churchyard singing the hymn "For the men at the Front." The wounded soldiers from Underwath Hospital formed a guard of honour around the memorial. General Carleton, after unveiling the Roll of Honour, which was covered by the Union Jack, read the inscription: To the Glory of God, and in grateful remembrance of the parishioners and worshippers of the Parish Church of St. Lawrence who nobly did their duty in the great war, this Roll of Honour, given by the children of the parish, was dedicated by the General Office commanding the Isle of Wight upon Easter Sunday, April 8th, 1917. Then followed the names of the 48 sailors and soldiers who had joined His Majesty's forces. General Carleton said he had much pleasure in dedicating the village Roll of Honour given by the children of the parish, and trusted the memory of the brave men who had fallen would inspire all with a high sense of duty. After prayer by the Rector the congregation dispersed. The Roll of Honour has been beautifully designed and hand painted, and the names are written in good bold type. It is enclosed in a handsome oak frame with glass panel, and placed close to the gate of the Churchyard so that it can be easily read by all who pass by.
