Inscription

TO THE MEMORY
OF EDWARD GROSE ESQUIRE,
LATE A CAPTAIN IN H. M. FIRST REGIMENT OF GUARDS,
AND THE ONLY SON OF SIR NASH GROSE, KNIGHT,
AND DAME MARY HIS WIFE.
HE FELL IN BATTLE AGAINST THE ARMIES OF FRANCE,
THUS CROWNING IN THE DEFENCE OF
NATIONAL AND GENERAL INDEPENDENCE A VICTORIOUS WARFARE,
WHICH HAD EXTENDED FROM SPAIN TO FLANDERS,
FROM CORUNNA AND CADIZ TO BAYONNE AND WATERLOO,
HE DIED IN THE 32ND YEAR OF HIS AGE,
ON THE 16TH DAY OF JUNE A. D. 1815.
FAR FROM HIS SEA-GIRT PRIORY'S GREEN DOMAIN,
FAR FROM HIS GROVES, ANCESTRAL TOMBS AND FANE,
BENEATH A FOREIGN TURF THE SOLDIER LIES:
WHAT FUNERAL POMP PROCLAIMED HIS OBSEQUIES?
THE VICTORS' SHOUTS, THE FOES' DISASTROUS CRIES
HAVE PEALED HIS DIRGE, HIS PARTING REQUIEM SANG,
AND HIS LAST KNELL THE CANNONS THUNDER RANG.
PEACE TO THE BRAVE! THE EYE WITH STERN DELIGHT
BEHOLDS THE WIDE CONFUSION OF THE FIGHT,
COUNTS IN THIS HEAP A SACRIFICE OF FOES
SLAIN AT THE ALTAR OF MANKINDS REPOSE:
IN THAT A MARTYRED OFFERING UNTO HEAVEN.
WHOSE SINS ARE FOR THEIR PATRIOT WOUNDS FORGIVEN,
WHEN VICTORYS STANDARD IS BY FREEDOM FURLED,
AND CONQUEST RESCUES, NOT ENSLAVES THE WORLD,
HOLY THE GROUND ON WHICH THE CHAMPION STANDS,
HOLY THE WEAPON GLITTERING IN HIS HANDS:
BRIGHT ARE HIS DYING LOOKS, AS WESTERN SKIES
TINGED BY THE SINKING SUN: AGAIN TO RISE
HE SUFFERS TRANSIENT NIGHT, AND AT HIS CLOSE
IN GLORY TO THE EARTH BEQUEATHS REPOSE.
