TO THE MEMORY OF EDWARD GROSE ESQUIRE, LATE A CAPTAIN IN H. M. FIRST REGIMENT OF GUARDS, AND THE ONLY SON OF SIR NASH GROSE, KNIGHT, AND DAME MARY HIS WIFE. HE FELL IN BATTLE AGAINST THE ARMIES OF FRANCE, THUS CROWNING IN THE DEFENCE OF NATIONAL AND GENERAL INDEPENDENCE A VICTORIOUS WARFARE, WHICH HAD EXTENDED FROM SPAIN TO FLANDERS, FROM CORUNNA AND CADIZ TO BAYONNE AND WATERLOO, HE DIED IN THE 32ND YEAR OF HIS AGE, ON THE 16TH DAY OF JUNE A. D. 1815. FAR FROM HIS GROVES, ANCESTRAL TOMBS AND FANE, BENEATH A FOREIGN TURF THE SOLDIER LIES: WHAT FUNERAL POMP PROCLAIMED HIS OBSEQUIES? THE VICTORS' SHOUTS, THE FOES' DISASTROUS CRIES HAVE PEALED HIS DIRGE, HIS PARTING REQUIEM SANG, AND HIS LAST KNELL THE CANNONS THUNDER RANG. PEACE TO THE BRAVE! THE EYE WITH STERN DELIGHT BEHOLDS THE WIDE CONFUSION OF THE FIGHT, COUNTS IN THIS HEAP A SACRIFICE OF FOES SLAIN AT THE ALTAR OF MANKINDS REPOSE: IN THAT A MARTYRED OFFERING UNTO HEAVEN.
